LEARN HOW TO SUPPORT THE YOUNG PEOPLE IN YOUR LIFE
Youth Mental Health First Aid teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use disorders among adolescents ages 12-18. This training gives you the you need to reach out and provide initial support to young people who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to appropriate care.

Learn how to respond with the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan (ALGEE):
A - assess for risk of suicide or harm
L - listen non-judgmentally
G - give reassurance and information
E - encourage appropriate professional help
E - encourage self-help and other support strategies

AFTER THE COURSE, YOU’LL BE ABLE TO:
  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD).
  • Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use
  • Understand how to interact with a young person in crisis. 
  • Know how to connect a young person with appropriate support. 
  • Better understand trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying.
Open to anyone 18 years and older who regularly works with youth. Great for teachers, school staff, parents, and coaches. 

This course is being offered free of charge. It consists of two 3.5 hr in-person classes, on Wednesdays, November 12 and 19, 5:30-9:00 pm, at the East Granby Public Library. You must complete both sessions to receive your certification.

About the Instructor
Justine Ginsberg, RN, BSN, is the Community Health Coordinator for the Farmington Valley Health District and has been actively promoting mental health in the community since 2014. She serves as the Program Director of Resilience Grows Here (RGH) and is certified to teach QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer) as well as all Mental Health First Aid courses. Known for her warmth, enthusiasm, and engaging presence, Justine is a pleasure to listen to and learn from.
